Glenlo Abbey

County: Galway

Star: 5

Situated on a 138-acre estate overlooking Lough Corrib, Glenlo Abbey was formerly the ancestral home of the Ffrench and Blake families, two of the fourteen Tribes that ruled over Galway for centuries. The original house dates back to 1740, and is privately owned by the Bourke Family. Glenlo Abbey Hotel situated in Galway in the West of Ireland is one of the most exclusive 5 Star Hotels in Ireland offering unrivalled facilities.

The 46 bedrooms and suites at Glenlo Abbey Hotel have been designed with an emphasis on general space and comfort, and afford unrivalled views of the dramatic West of Ireland landscape with its ever-changing colours. Lake view rooms give a panoramic vista of Lower Lough Corrib, Connemara and on a clear day Croagh Patrick, or the "Reek" as it is known locally. Guests will enjoy luxury surroundings, fine linen, towels & bathrobe, deluxe comfort, warmth, comfort and peace. All accommodation and services are designed so that our guests experience five star comforts throughout their stay.

One of the highlights of staying at Glenlo Abbey is the wonderful Pullman Restaurant. The historic Pullman train carriage had been residing at Elsenham Station in Hertfordshire, England, before joining the many and varied facilities already available at Glenlo Abbey Hotel. Converted into a wonderful Restaurant Car the richness of wood, marqueterie and brass-work within it reflect this former "raison d''étre". The Pullman seats 66, and comprises two Carriages and a Kitchen Car. There are also two enclosed 6-seater Compartments - perfect for intimate Private Dining.

The bright and airy River Room restaurant was designed to complement the history and tradition of the 260-year old Glenlo Abbey Hotel. With tall windows on all five exterior walls, guests are afforded superb views of Lough Corrib wherever they are seated.

Guests can enjoy the intimate surroundings of the Kentfield Lounge where afternoon tea is served during the day and before and after dinner. The Twelve Great Irish Writers portraits that hang on the wall are always a conversational point and often cause debate on naming each one of them. The windows overlooking the golf course offer an estate frontage of 1500 feet and the 9th & 18th holes are in easy view.

The warm and cosy Oak Cellar Bar is the perfect spot for ''before'' or ''after'' dinner drinks and lively conversation. Originally the kitchen in bygone days, it is now restored with warmth and character. Open from 10 a.m. onwards, the Oak Cellar also serves lunch and refreshments.

With a 138-acre lakeside golf estate as your playground, golf among other activities is on your doorstep to enjoy. The unique 9-hole double green golf course is a par 72 parkland golf course with rolling hills, lakes and fabulous views of Lough Corrib. Glenlo Abbey G.C. is the closest golf course to Galway City and is a favourite amongst locals. The 12 Bay Driving Range is the ideal place to warm up before a round of golf but also for group and individual golf tuition. While clay pigeon shooting, archery and some of the best fishing in Western Europe are easily organised right on-site at Glenlo Abbey. Other activities that can be organised near the property include horse riding, lake boating, water sports, tennis and many more.
