Stella Maris was originally built as a coastguard fortress and later became a convent. Today it welcomes visitors to Ireland’s wild northwest as a beautifully restored Country House Hotel.

Proprietors Frances Kelly and her husband Terence McSweeney have blended the traditions of old Ireland with the comforts of contemporary Ireland, a combination that provides relaxation, tranquillity and mesmerizing beauty.

The detailed restoration of this imposing 19th century structure took two years to complete. Antiques are interspersed with comfortable leather furniture to create a ''homely'' sense for guests. Open fires warm the inviting bar and lounge, where guests relax before and after dinner. Visitors can enjoy the tranquil setting from the 100-foot conservatory looking out on Bunatrahir Bay and Downpatrick Head, one of the most picturesque sea stacks in Europe.

The 12 guest rooms are individually furnished with high-quality linens complementing tasteful antiques. Most of the rooms have ocean views and all have Queen or King size beds.

Dining at Stella Maris is a culinary experience that rivals the best restaurants in Ireland. Frances Kelly also the hotels Executive Chef oversees the kitchen personally, working with the Head Chef on a daily menu based on the availability of fresh product. Stella Maris features its own garden for herbs and vegetables and has been cited for its culinary excellence in several noted publications and guides.

Stella Maris is equidistant from two of the finest links golf courses in Ireland—Enniscrone and Carne/Belmullet, both of which are about 40 minutes driving time. Rosses Point, another world-class links course in neighbouring Sligo, is about 1 hour away. All three offer a true golf challenge, as well as some of the most beautiful ocean vistas in the world. Sea and freshwater fishing are outside the front door as are beautiful walking and cycling routes.
